BEATLES ON FRESH AIR

The Beatles made many trips to the BBC during their early years of success, treating UK listeners to rare live performances of old Rock favorites from the band's stage act, as well as early renditions of their own compositions. Amazingly, these broadcasts were not archived by the BBC. But thanks to diligent fans who taped the programs at home, archivist and sleuth Kevin Howlett was able to piece together the history of The Beatles on the BBC in his new book and in the production of new Beatles BBC albums. Howlett sat down with Terry Gross to tell Fresh Air about this amazing journey of pop culture archeology. The program includes great clips of The Beatles joking and playing on the radio.
